Autograph Document signed: "J P Usher plaintiff's attorney", 1 page, 7¾x10¼. No place, no date. In the civil case of Peterson Geargin v. Arch. Calloway, Usher has handwritten a paragraph summarizing the main points made by the defendant. John Palmer Usher (1816-1889) was Attorney General of Indiana (1861-1862) before becoming Assistant Secretary of the Interior. He succeeded Caleb Smith as Secretary in 1862 when the latter accepted a judicial appointment. Usher was loyal to Lincoln and a competent administrator but had little influence in the Cabinet. He was replaced as Secretary in 1864, prospering thereafter as a railroad lawyer. During the 1840s and 1850s, when he wrote this document, Usher, a skilled trial lawyer, was traveling the circuit in Indiana and Illinois. It was during this period that he met and became a friend of Abraham Lincoln, who was similarly engaged. Normal mailing folds. Right edge lightly frayed. Toned. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso.
